Not only has the concept of Stigma been taken care of down to the smallest detail, both in terms of design and scenography, but also the selection of plants. A rich planting design was arranged on a plot of over 200 m2 with over 800 plants including trees, shrubs, climbers, ground covers and perennial herbaceous plants, all of Lombard origin.
The objective is to recreate a landscape comparable to that of a forest garden. From a design and agronomic point of view, the reference biome is the temperate mesophilous broad-leaved forest, typical of the low hill and plain areas.
The temperate forest naturally hosts a good variety of insects, birds and mammals (wolves, foxes, bears, deer, rodents, passerines, diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey). Furthermore, broad-leaved trees do not produce acidification of the soil, as happens with conifers, and the soil that develops is rich in organic matter and compatible with a lush woodland garden full of life, also interesting from an ornamental point of view.
Like a forest, our garden is also designed with a structure of layers connected to each other which contribute to the formation of a plant community.
1- Forming the “roof” of the garden are the groves made up of around 20 trees including oaks, birches and maples;
2 – An intermediate layer is made up of shrubby patches that grow under or at the edges of the forest. We have planted wild roses, small fruits, cornus, viburnums and other plants capable of bearing fruit and providing sustenance for the fauna.
3 – A lower layer is made up of perennials, alternating masses of ground cover, carex, wild strawberries, ferns and flowering perennials which guarantee graduated flowering to maximize the flight season of pollinators, from March to October.
The area around the body of water is characterized by bank vegetation and hygrophilous species, with a prevalence of willows, water irises and water lilies.
The trees and shrubs were provided by two technical sponsors: Coplant of Canneto sull’Oglio (MN), one of the largest nurseries in northern Italy and historical partner of the Monza studio, and Antica Pieve of Bedizzole (BS), a designer nursery with a selected catalog from which the perennial herbaceous plants and all the undergrowth were chosen.
